The strawbale home
In the spring of 2007 my wife and I embarked on a three year journey in the design and construction of our strawbale home in Emyvale, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
By the end of the autumn in 2007 we had started stuccoing the bales and then began another year and a half of stuccoing, tarping and untarping, erecting and tearing down scaffolding and just basic grueling work. Had we guessed the amount of effort this little house would require we’d have never started but we persevered and by Labour Day weekend in 2009 we had moved in much to our (and our banks) relief.
This was not the end unfortunately as we soon discovered our stucco was not holding up and over the summer of 2010 we added a rain screen of eastern white cedar shingles.
I had made entries on another blog during the construction process but am going to re-document the entire process in a more consistent and organized manner and with the benefit of hind sight and a bit more perspective.
