This chest fridge conversion made quite a lot of news (here and here and here) when Mr. Chalko first published his DIY page on making chest freezer refrigerators. I was intrigues and noted that he had started een selling kits by the time I stumbled across his page, so I e-mailed him for more information. His response stated that they would not work for North American appliances (he is from Australia) and I would have to assemble my own electronics. I was a little let down as I am not much of an electronics buff, and decided to do a little more research. That’s when I discovered, much to my surprise and pleasure, that beer was the answer!
Well, more specifically home brew and home brew supply shops. You see for years crafty brew-makers have been converting chest freezers into refrigerators for their kegs of the frosty stuff and even mounting taps to them, so the home brew equipment manufacturers started making temperature controllers for them. A quick search revealed more than one brand and varying levels of sophistication from simple analog controllers to digital heavy duty units!
Best of all they are all plug-and-play type setups, just plug the freexer into the unit, the unit into the wall and place the probe inside the freezer! Warrantied and everything! So if you are looking at doing the chest freezer conversion, you may want to stop by your local home brew shop and ask if they’ll order ya one of these units in!
