Running for my life

I’ve started running in the mornings with Mike at the Stratford recreation centre. We go for 6am and walk/jog for about 30-40 minutes. I can see improvements already and have steadily increased my distance running every week/day, with the exception of Wednesday this week where three days in a row had my legs too tired to keep up. i found a cool site with lots of training tips and a useful running log tool. I have been filling it out (distance recorded is the running portion only) to keep track of my progress:

Cool Running Log

I’d like to be able to run at least 5k by spring, however if I can get there sooner I will be happy with that too! The Cool Running site has training schedules for getting from the couch to 5k in two months so you never know I may be able to as well, I would follow their plan but am enjoying the way I am training now too and will stick with for the time being…

Down on the Windfarm

[photopress:windfarm_1.jpg,thumb,pp_image] On New Year’s Day Laine and I decided to take a drive up to North Lake, PEI to see the new windfarm that was recently installed there. We had spent New Year’s Eve at a friend’s place on St. Peter’s Harbour Road and weren’t to awfully far away from North Lake anyways. The turbines were impressive but the best view IMO was the turbines in the background of this abandoned farm house on the east side of North Lake. It had been a looong time since I had been in that part of PEI and it felt a little like being in a different province, rounding East Point I was surprised at how close and tall Cape Breton looks from there, it was so unexpected I wasn’t sure where it was for a minute.

Maritime Electric Green Power Program

Maritime Electric sells wind power from the PEI Energy Corporation to it’s customers through the Green Power Program. This was started back in 2000 or so and was almost immediately fully subscribed. At the time I had thought of signing up for the program but lived with and shared the bills with three other guys who didn’t seem to keen on paying more for our electric bill for no tangible benefit (to their eyes).

A couple years ago I called both Maritime Electric and PEI Energy Corporation and asked of there was a waiting list to get enrolled in the program. This seemed to surprise everyone I asked, nobody considered after the initial program was full that there may be people willing to wait to take over lapsed green power accounts. In fact, no one seemed to know if there even were any lapsed accounts due to businesses failing, resident’s moving away, passing on, etc… I suggested that they look into starting a list, at the very least to keep track of demand for wind power in the market, sudden increases in demand (as I suspect may have happened in the last few years) may make expansion of the program suddenly more of a priority.

To my knowledge this step has never been taken, therefore, I have created an online petition (not really a petition, more a list for expressions of interest) for concerned residents of PEI to sign and let PEI Energy Corporation, Maritime Electric and the Province of PEI that sustainable power development and availability is important to Islanders and we are willing to pay for it now.

PEI has become prominent in Wind Power development and research but there is no time to rest on our laurels, we need to a real leader and with our blossoming aerospace and technical industries it’s a real possibility. It’s time to take it to the next level, and without delay!

Please take the time to sign the petition on the link below if you agree!
