Winning the Oil Endgame-Homepage

Our governments and heads of manufacturing need to visit this page and read the free book contained therein. While I have yet to read the entire thing, I did watch a lecture the author gave on the subject to MIT and it makes shockingly simple sense. Why these ideas aren’t being implememnted with more speed is hard to fathom. You can see the lecture here: Winning the Oil Endgame – Amory Lovins

Chest fridge

Chest fridge

This chest fridge conversion made quite a lot of news (here and here and here) when Mr. Chalko first published his DIY page on making chest freezer refrigerators.  I was intrigues and noted that he had started een selling kits by the time I stumbled across his page, so I e-mailed him for more information.  His response stated that they would not work for North American appliances (he is from Australia) and I would have to assemble my own electronics.  I was a little let down as I am not much of an electronics buff, and decided to do a little more research.  That’s when I discovered, much to my surprise and pleasure, that beer was the answer!

Well, more specifically home brew and home brew supply shops. You see for years crafty brew-makers have been converting chest freezers into refrigerators for their kegs of the frosty stuff and even mounting taps to them, so the home brew equipment manufacturers started making temperature controllers for them.  A quick search revealed more than one brand and varying levels of sophistication from simple analog controllers to digital heavy duty units!

Best of all they are all plug-and-play type setups, just plug the freexer into the unit, the unit into the wall and place the probe inside the freezer!  Warrantied and everything!  So if you are looking at doing the chest freezer conversion, you may want to stop by your local home brew shop and ask if they’ll order ya one of these units in!

Getting Healthy, body and mind

I have an urge to get healthy lately. Maybe because we’ve moved and it’s a fresh start, maybe cause I’ve just had a physical and my cholesterol is still high (getting better, but still high) or maybe cause I haven’t been feeling very healthy in general lately. Physically I could be doing better, I am about 15-20lbs heavier than I want to be, my skin is in rough shape, my energy is low and I have had a lot of colds and sicknesses this year.

I also have been anxious and stressed, leading me to be cranky and no fun at times. I definitely need some grounding that more exercise (i.e. going outside for fun) would give me. Finding old hobbies like photography and sketching that I’ve put on hold, would help too I think, as I think my brain needs some exercise as well. I feel like I have just been coasting for a while, not really using any sort of consciousness except when necessary (Yes, you can operate in you daily life without ever resorting to using your upper consciousness, lots of people don’t do anything else!).

So those are my goals, to wake the hell up and do something! Now, what to do, what to do…
