How To Eat Fried Worms

Laine and I went to see this movie with her folks and her nephew Rowan yesterday after i convinced them it was a great story (which the book I read years ago was…)  Turned out to be an OK movie but one that was seriously hacked from the original I suspect to a) shorten the timeline of the original story and b) add a more suitable after school series lesson.

If you were a fan of the original novel by Thomas Rockwell (Norman Rockswell’s son!) as I was this is not the same story you remember, instead of four main characters in the book, Billy, Tom, Joe and Alan, there is a cast of about 10 various cliched character types and one girl plus Billy is now a “new kid” in school.  Instead of 15 worms in 15 days for $50 (to buy a dirtbike) it’s 10 worms in one afternoon, the loser walks down the hall of the school with worms in his pants.  The plot line was stretched pretty thin (I don’t think any kid these days would eat ten worms for so low a payoff!)  but the movie did show a lot insight into the vocabularly and thoughts of 11 year old boys.

It was a generally funny story but it seemed to me to lack the soul the book had, maybe because of the force feeding of morals, maybe because of the reduced timeline, probably because of the missing dynamic of the original four characters relationship in the book.  To sum up, being a fan of the original book I had to see it, but I would recommend anyone who hasn’t read it to stay away and visit the library first.

NOFX and the wedding website

NOFX last Monday night was awesome! Terry, Kevin, Michelle, Aaron and I went to see them play as part of the Flip The Switch show in Dartmouth and I loved it! They played for over an hour which was twice as long as the chumps who went to the Warped tour got to see ‘em! hehe! They played all kinds of old stuff like Linoleum, Moron Bros, etc.. and three or four new songs from Wolves in Wolves Clothing and generally put on a hell of a show. We went to the “After Party” which was a “punk kareoke” night at the Attic which was an absolute bust, so we went to the casino and played blackjack with the coolest dealer and pitboss ever, and I walked away $20 richer!

The wedding website is finally done (well almost, the flash file won’t render RSVP correctly and it comes up as “RP”) and can be seen at http://wedding.greensprite.ca. I’d really like people to let k=me know what they think and if you are coming, please SIGN THE GUESTBOOK!

House-sitting in the country

Laine and I spent the last week house sitting for her sister Robyn in Emyvale, right next door to the field we are going to buy. It was great sleeping at night with no lights or noises or people yelling outside on the street! We also got to scope out and eat some wild blueberries and raspberries, those patches will be awesome next year when we are living out there!

It felt like home (the land, not Robyn’s house!) and really got me thinking about building next year and our future. Working towards self-sufficiency and lessening our reliance on the modern money-circle is so our goal now. We are going to be so much more at peace and centered living in the country I think, I know it felt better just having a week out there…
